Wonderful Istanbul Tour with Hall Family
Today we had wonderful tour with Hall Family. I picked them from Istanbul Port where Norwegian Jade docked. Since the family had 2 adults and 2 kids to give us more freedom and cost effective I offered them a guide only service.
After meeting them from the Port of Istanbul we took a cab and went to Sultanahmet district. (We paid 10 Turkish Liras to the cab). Our first stop was the Hipodrome, Saw the obelisk, Serpentine column. Continued to Blue Mosque and afterwards Church of Hagia Sophia. One of the recent movies Argo was scened in this magnificent building.
After the visit to the Church of Hagia Sophia we stopped at a pastry shop. Had a liiitle rest and sampled Simit (Circle Bread with sesame seeds) and enjoyed some Turkish Tea. Walked througn some old Ottoman Royal Family cemetery and visited Grand Bazaar. Walked through the colorful shops and maze streets of Grand Bazaar.
Continued through Mahmutpasa Street. Saw where the locals shop. Showed them some of the buildings scened in the last James Bond movie: Skyfall. Visited Spice Market. Stopped at one of my high school friends shop and tasted Turkish Delight. Walked around Spice Market saw the Ottoman pet shops that has been running over 400 years. Stopped and enjoyed Baklava with wallnuts.
Crossed over Galata Bridge. Saw the boats making fish sandwiches and fisherman catching sardines. Walked through the 19th century bank neigbourhood and Jewish residential area of Karakoy. Took pictures of the narrow streets and Genoise Tower of Galata.
Reached the crowded local shopping street of Istiklal. Stopped by the Church of St. Anthony. Sampled hot halva by Koska and had lunch in Pera Diner Cafe at Nevizade. Kids were tired but they did very well. Mr. Hall wanted to continue to the tour but wanted to drop the kids back to the ship to the kids club. We took a cab back to the ship and dropped the kids to the kids club and continued to our tour.
We walked to Kabatas and took a public ferry to Uskudar. Enjoyed a 15 minute cruise on the Bosphorus passing by Dolmabahce Palace. Walked in Uskudar Market and Antique stores. Sampled Sahlep (White Chocolate Taste Hot Drink with Cinnamon). Walked by the Maiden`s Tower which is one the symbols of Istanbul and scened in James Bond World is Not Enough Movie. Had great pictures of Bosphorus, Norwegian Jade and Maidens Tower. Finally we took a public boat back to Kabatas and walked bavk to the ship.
The Hall Family enjoyed the tour very much. By walking they saw much more than their fellow passengers and by getting a guide only service they paid much less than their fellow passengers.

Denizhan was our tour guide in both Ephesus and Istanbul, and was much more than we expected a tour guide to be. "Knowledgeable" about the places we went (or anything else we asked about) doesn't do him justice - he was an encyclopedia of information about anything Turkish. In addition, he was very personable, and went out of his way to make sure that we and our two little girls were comfortable and satisfied. If he's available for your trip, make sure and grab him.

We booked a walking tour with you for the 4 of us in early June during a stop on a Celebrity Mediterranean cruise and a private tour with car, driver and guide in Ephesus. I apologize for the delay in contacting you regarding our experiences on these tours. Your advice concerning the walking tour was right on - every major site that we wanted to see was in a relatively small area. Our tour guide Delek(sp?) was a personable, well-educated guide and we enjoyed the tour. The only slight negative was that she seemed distracted at times and would take take phone calls. All of us can not say enough good things about our Ephesus guide, John Gurel. His command of the English language, in-depth personal knowledge of the site, concern for our comfort, love of Turkey and wanting to share his country with us far exceeded our expectations. We learned so much from him about Turkey- ancient history, current events, culture, daily life, food, drink, art and even more. He stimulated such an interest that all of us want to go back to Turkey for a longer visit in the near future. And not the least, he was fun to spend time with- the time we spent with him was a high-light of our cruise. I truly believe most American visitors would feel the same way and I hope you will consider utilizing his talents as frequently as possible. You also arranged transfer from the ship in Rome to the airport and a short tour along the way. Our driver, guide, there was Lucca and he was great, as well! Day 1 - Istanbul
Transfer to your hotel in the old city of Istanbul.
Day 2 - Full day excursion to Istanbul (Breakfast)
Walking tour of the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia Church, Hipodromo, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar. We will spend the night in Istanbul.
Day 3 - Istanbul> Izmir> Kusadasi (Breakfast, Dinner)
Visit Spice Bazaar and cruise the Bosphorus. In the afternoon, transfer to Istanbul Ataturk Airport to take your flight to Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey. Transfer to your hotel in Kusadasi. We will spend the night in Kusadasi
Day 4 - Pamukkale full day excursion (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Trip to Pamukkale (3 hours) Visit the ruins of ancient Hierapolis and walk on the terraces of calcium carbonate. Option to swim in the ancient thermal pools. We will spend the night in Kusadasi
Day 5: Full day excursion to Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
In the morning visit the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Then it leads to the House of the Virgin Mary. Visit the probable house where the Virgin Mary spent her last 9 years. Visit the ancient city of Ephesus. After lunch, learn about handmade Turkish rugs. We will spend the night in Kusadasi.
Day 6 - Kusadasi> Kayseri> Cappadocia (Breakfast box, Dinner)
Early in the morning, transfer to Izmir airport to take the flight to Kayseri. After arriving at Kayseri, start your private tour of Cappadocia. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Cappadocia in Goreme, Esentepe and Pasabag. Visit to the open air Museum of Goreme where you can see where the first Christian settlements took refuge in times of persecution. See the incredible frescoes. We will spend the night in Cappadocia.
Day 7 - Cappadocia full day tour> Istanbul (Breakfast)
Today you have the option to start the day with a hot air balloon ride. Starting before sunrise, you will have time to join this optional activity before the day begins. You will be transferred back to your accommodation around 07:00 a.m./7: 30 a.m.
After breakfast, start your private tour at 09:30. See a new area of beautiful landscapes. You will see some of the most beautiful valleys of Cappadocia. We will also visit one of the Underground Cities that is famous in Cappadocia. See how the early Christians hid from the persecutors. Enjoy a great panoramic view at the Uchisar Castle. Return to Istanbul. We will spend the night in Istanbul. End of services

3 wonderful days at the Greek island of Samos
This week we enkoyed 3 wonderful days at the Greek island of Samos with my wife. This was our first visit and we enjoyed tremendously. Altough it is very close, it is quite different from Kusadasi. Samos is less crowded and less touristy than Kusadasi. It is a quite town you do not see many people walking through the streets and there are no salesman trying to attract you to their shops or restaurants. Samos is a charming island that we recommend travellers who are staying in Kusadasi for an overnight trip to Samos from Kusadasi.
Ferry from Kusadasi to Samos
The ferry takes approximately 1.5 hours to go to Samos. You leave Kusadasi Cruise Port at 9am and arrive Samos at 10.30, you wait a bit at the passport control and ready to explore at 11am. The port for Samos is located in Vathi which is considered as the city center of Samos. There are several hotels you can enjoy. Many of them are not beach hotels. 1.5km distance to the port, there is Gaggou beach. There are some beach resorts there. It may be littfle difficult to walk there, if you have heavy bags. We stayed at a small hotel called Aria Boutique Hotel which was ok. The location was great, but do not have high expectations from the hotel. It was near the bus station so we are able to take the bus to several locations. The hotel costs are much less than Kusadasi.
Samos town has some shops and restaurants. It is very quite during the day. After 9pm, you would see the local people at the main square drinking iced coffee. In Turkey you would see people drinking hot tea and in Samos iced coffee. The restaurants serve almost the same dishes. For non seafood and non fish eaters the choices are not very satisfying after Turkey. There are some beaches in walking distance to the town center. The most welknown one is Gaggou beach. All the beaches are very clean. Gaggou beach there are sunbeds and umbrellas that you can rent for 3 euros.
Next day we took the public bus to Lemonakia Beach. The bus service is not frequent and the buses are full of people and most non airconditioned. (For public bus schedule please click here) We paid 1.5 Euros each for 15 minutes drive to Lemonakia beach. This is one of the best beaches, I have everr been during my travels. Very clean and quite. Once compared to Turkey more civilised. It is a pebble beach. We rented an umbrella and two comfortable sunbeds for 6 Euros. Afterwards we had walk of 10 minutes to Kokkari where we enjoyed a late lunch. With recommendations of our friends in Kusadasi, we dined at Meltemi Restaurant. A family run restaurant. Yannis and Spiros two brothers will serve you. They have also a nice beach in front of the restaurant. Kokkari has a long strip of pebble beach with restaurants and bars. Assuming that this place would be very colourful at nights and full vacationers. Kokkari is more of vacation town. If we would go to Samos for the next time we would stay in Kokkari but would go to beach at Lemonakia.
In our third and last day, we took the bus to Pythagorion. It took us 20 minutes drive with a public bus and costed 1.70 Euros per person. This the birth place of famous mathematician Phythagoras. He lived here at 6th century BC. while Thales of Miletus was living at opposite shores. There are few ruins here but after Ephesus is noncomparable. After Ephesus, this will not satisfy anyone. Several tourist stores. We puchased hand painted magnet from a local artist. By the coast there are two pebble beaches and strip of restaurants and bars. Very quite during the day. Much smaller than Vathi and Kokkari. Must be lively with tourisits at night. Turkish shores are clearly visible from here.
Overall we enjoyed Samos a lot. We recommend travellers staying in Kusadasi to go to Samos But we do not recommend a day trip at least stay an overnight. The return ferry departing at 5pm. If you are seeking for great beaches, we recommend going to Samos. The historical sites will not satisfy you after Turkey. If we go to Samos again, we would have an overnight stay in Kokkari and enjoy Lemonakia during the day and have a nice dinner at Meltemi Restaurant adn return next day.
For travellers, who would enjoy a holidays in Samos, a day trip Kusadasi is a must. Travellers may enjoy a historical tour of Temple of Artemis, Ancient City of Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary and Basilica of St. John. For private tour inquiries, you can contact us.

If we would go to Samos for the next time we would stay in Kokkari but would go to beach at Lemonakia.
In our third and last day, we took the bus to Pythagorion. It took us 20 minutes drive with a public bus and costed 1.70 Euros per person. This the birth place of famous mathematician Phythagoras. He lived here at 6th century BC. while Thales of Miletus was living at opposite shores. There are few ruins here but after Ephesus is noncomparable. After Ephesus, this will not satisfy anyone. Several tourist stores. We puchased hand painted magnet from a local artist. By the coast there are two pebble beaches and strip of restaurants and bars. Very quite during the day. Much smaller than Vathi and Kokkari. Must be lively with tourisits at night. Turkish shores are clearly visible from here.
Overall we enjoyed Samos a lot. We recommend travellers staying in Kusadasi to go to Samos But we do not recommend a day trip at least stay an overnight. The return ferry departing at 5pm. If you are seeking for great beaches, we recommend going to Samos. The historical sites will not satisfy you after Turkey. If we go to Samos again, we would have an overnight stay in Kokkari and enjoy Lemonakia during the day and have a nice dinner at Meltemi Restaurant adn return next day.
For travellers, who would enjoy a holidays in Samos, a day trip Kusadasi is a must. Travellers may enjoy a historical tour of Temple of Artemis, Ancient City of Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary and Basilica of St. John. For private tour inquiries, you can contact us.
